One Stop Convenience Store Raises Money for Howlands

One Stop Convenience Stores warehouse staff raise moneyOne Stop Convenience Store warehouse staff have raised two hundred and fifty pounds for Howlands.

Following some lively games of boccia, organised by Holly Sheen of Sports World, Simon Williams from One Stop presented a check for two hundred and fifty pounds to Dawn Field a trustee of Howlands.

To show our appreciation and that of the members Tom Ellis presented Simon with a piece of original artwork produced in-house by a Howlands member.

We were very lucky to have welcome our “new” councillor Aleks Lukic to the Centre.
We very much appreciated his kind words of praise for the work we do. We hope that he will be able to visit us again in the future.

Many thanks One Stop, without your generosity we wouldn’t be able to offer the range of activities on offer to those in the community who need it the most.

Neighbourhood Policing Takes on New Meaning

Neighbourhood policing took on a completely new meaning in Dewsbury when Howlands received a rather official visit from a group of Police Horses.

Pleasantly surprised by the unprompted visit from the patrolling mounted police officers, Howlands members, and volunteers were eager to learn more and be introduced to these very special horses.
Deborah Hall, manager of Howlands, said:  “The visit was totally unexpected and the members were really pleased to go out into the sunshine and spend some time admiring the horses.”

Prince’s Trust visit Howlands

12345A group of young people from the Prince’s Trust visited Howlands as part of a 12 week course “Team Programme” run by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The programme is to help young peoples’ personal development and demonstrates the impact they can make within the local community. The trainees spent time speaking to Howlands members about fire safety in the home.

It was a very successful afternoon which gave our members and  Prince’s Trust Volunteers the opportunity to get to know  each other better.

Pancake Day and Sports Activities at Howlands

Pancake Day and sports activities… it’s all go at Howlands, and we must say a huge thank you to Sport Works Ltd who organised sports activities for our members and volunteers to take enjoy.
Following our funding from Sport England the Howlands now benefits from sporting activities such as Chairobics, Boccia, Curling, and mini-Olympics being run at Howlands until the end of the year.
Pictured are our members enjoying the latest sporting activity, but with a twist – pancake tossing!
Our pancake preparation is part of our Shrove Tuesday legend which celebrates ” The Pancake Dog” who proudly stands on the roof of Howlands waiting to be summoned by the ringing of a bell on Pancake Day to leap down to eat his pancake.
I must have missed him – the pancakes have gone though!
For more details about the sports activities we provide please contact Deborah Hall on 01924 463693

 Halloween Raffle Success

A Thousand Thanks to all our supporters.
We would like to thank everyone who supported our recent Halloween Raffle which raised £1,000.
Screen Shot 2018-10-22 at 12.42.44

This is a terrific amount of money to be raised by a raffle.

Particular thanks must be given to Christine Sykes who sourced many of the prizes including the Television.

Without your support we would not have achieved this wonderful amount. A big effort was made by everyone involved and we raised twice as much as anything we have ever achieved before.

Howlands art exhibition members and volunteers take an important role at Howlands. Here is member Nigel Parkinson (left) and volunteer Tom Ellis helping to install the Howlands Art Exhibition in Dewsbury Town Hall.

After a  successful preview at Howlands the art exhibition of members’ art and crafts has now moved to the Ground Floor of Dewsbury Town Hall

The exhibition  celebrates the successes of vulnerable adults  from all areas of  North Kirklees who due to physical or mental disabilities have become marginalised and isolated members of our community.

Through Howlands they have found friendship and support, developing skills and the confidence to find their own abilities for creativity. The results can be seen in the work on display and are well worth a visit.
