Lockdown Garden Inspiration From Howlands Member

Our members and volunteers have been very busy in their gardens during lockdown.

Becki, like many others, took to the garden and even though the garden centres were closed she successfully managed to grow, tomatoes, peas, beans, peppers and spring onions.

Take a look at these impressive pictures:

By July she had her first crop of radishes, lettuce, rocket and strawberries. She didn’t stop there though.

Inspired by Howlands member, John Walmsley, who made his own water garden, Beckit took on the challenge to develop her own little living water garden.

It’s a work in progress, but look at the picture, Becki loves it and so do we.

Doesn’t it look fantastic?

Pancake Dog Mascot Receives a Shrove Tuesday Offering

The Howlands pancake dog mascot receives a Shrove Tuesday offering from local gym owner, and guess what, it’s a pancake!
Sam Cullingworth, owner of The Muscle Pit gym in Dewsbury, visited Howlands on Shrove Tuesday to present the Centre’s Pancake Dog.
For those of you who don’t know, our Pancake Dog can be seen perched right on the roof of the building and it is alleged to jump down for his pancake when the bell is rung on Shrove Tuesday.
We didn’t see the dog come down for his pancake! But we certainly enjoyed our pancakes.

Thankfully all 28 don’t attend in one group visit! Rather the students attend in pairs on a daily rotation to work with us and our service users to gain valuable experience of working in different environments.

We are all delighted to have them here, especially our members who enjoy the social interaction as well as being able to help other individuals with their developments goals. Everyone is winning and we’re all very much enjoying the experience – they are a credit to the University.

Cake Decorating at Howlands

Cake decorating at Howlands doesn’t get any better than our last session set-up and run by the recently catering management lecturer, Julia Fenton.

25 Sep 3-1

Both members and volunteers took part in this new activity. One of our members, Amanda, said “It was really good to do something totally different to our usual activities.”

While Judith said, “The best bit is that you can eat what you have made.”

Brenda enjoyed herself so much that she has ordered a kit off the internet and is going to teach her granddaughter how to decorate cakes.

Many other members have shown interest in the course so happily we are planning to run more courses in the near future. Watch this space!
